Renovating a kitchen is one of the most exciting and transformative things you can do in your home, but it can also feel overwhelming. Where to start, who to trust, how to turn that dreamy image in your mind into something real and lasting? Over the years, renovating homes alongside one another, Sheldon and I have discovered that the most beautiful, seamless kitchen projects often share one thing in common: a design-build approach.

It’s a method that feels intuitive, but is surprisingly rare — and it’s something we think deserves a little more celebration.

What is the Design-Build Approach?

At its heart, the design-build process means that the same team, the same trusted group of designers, carpenters and project managers, handles everything from the initial sketches to the final fitting of your custom cabinetry. There’s no disjointed handover between separate designers, builders, and contractors. No confusion, no lost intentions along the way.

Instead, there is a steady, thoughtful conversation, one where your ideas, the designer’s vision, and the practical know-how of the makers evolve together into something cohesive and true.

At Prentis Collective, we embrace this way of working because it feels natural to us. We design our kitchens, we build them in our wood shop, and we install them with the care and pride they deserve. It’s not just about efficiency, though it certainly saves time and headaches, it’s about preserving the integrity of the original vision, right down to the smallest detail.

Why It Matters

Designing and making a kitchen is not just about choosing colors and cabinet styles. It’s about understanding the fabric of a building, the way light moves through a room, accounting for the slightly crooked walls of an older home or the vast openness of a new-build project.

When the people designing your kitchen are also thinking about how it will be built and installed, they make more informed decisions. They’re practical and poetic all at once. They know when a little tweak on paper will save you major disruption on site. They know how to plan ahead for potential challenges and surprises, so the finished kitchen feels as though it’s always been there.

That sensitivity to the space, that reverence for getting it right, is something we take very seriously at Prentis Collective.

A More Personal Journey

There’s something unique and charming about the design-build approach: it’s more personal. Instead of being passed from hand to hand, you work with a small group of people who know your project inside and out. You build trust. You have someone to call when you’re not sure about a paint color or a tap finish. You feel part of the process, rather than just a spectator.

It’s a collaboration in the truest sense. And at the end, when you walk into your finished kitchen and feel that incredible swell of pride and pleasure, you’ll know that every person involved cared just as much as you did.

Our Way at Prentis Collective

At Prentis Collective, we’re incredibly proud to offer a truly bespoke, design-build experience. From our first conversation with you to the finishing touches, we are there, dreaming, drawing, crafting, fitting, and caring. We believe it’s the right way to approach a kitchen renovation. And in a world full of shortcuts and compromises, we think that’s something rather special.
